The Viking Art
of
ULF’S CRAFT
Ulf Haraldsen is the Viking name of Doug Erickson, an artist living in Surrey, BC. Although born in New Westminster, BC in 1960, he celebrates his Norwegian Heritage by being involved in Viking Age Norse Culture Recreation and Experimental Archeology and portrays a craftsman and merchant in Reik Félag Norse Culture Recreation Society and is also a member of the Sons of the North and Sons of Norway, Sleipner Lodge #8.
A self-taught painter, sculptor, and carver of wood, bone, horn, antler, leather and soapstone, he utilizes these media to create pieces of Viking art inspired by actual archaeological finds. He has studied Celtic art, Rosemaling (Norwegian traditional flower painting), Haida art, and of course, Viking art. Each piece is unique and, true to ancient norse ways, is also an item that has a function. He carves drinking horns, blowing horns, bone needle cases, wooden spoons, soapstone lamps, and many other things.
He also makes items out of metal - jewelry, merchant scales, Viking shield bosses (the bowl-shaped object in the middle of the round shield).
He has been working with leather since a teenager and is well-regarded for his Viking period shoes that he makes. His knowledge of leatherwork goes hand in hand with his art as many of his art objects use leather straps or other ancillary items. He can be contacted by email at: ulfharaldsen@gmail.com
